How to read a pet insurance rate filing
The most underused tool a pet owner has is the public rate filing database. In Florida it is IRFS (irfssearch.floir.gov); in most states it is SERFF Filing Access; California uses WARFF. A filing contains the rate pages, with the base rate and every factor, and the actuarial memorandum, with the loss ratio and the reasoning behind the increase.
Search by the underwriter, not the brand: “Independence American” for Pumpkin, Spot, Pets Best and Figo; “American Pet Insurance” for Trupanion; “Lemonade Insurance Company” for Lemonade.
